this morning i got a splinter
from walking around with bare feet
jane warned me about that
i hated the needle they used to get it out

but it wasn't so bad
the others wear shoes always:

loafers, sneakers, jellies,
heels, sling-backs

and rubber and hats and
gloves and over-coats

they never get splinters
and they never catch colds
and they say, "please"
and they say, "thank you"

(but i'm the happiest of all of us)
once i stepped on an ant hill
they'd never do that
but they've never felt the grass
with bare feet

stamattina ho preso una spina
andando in giro scalza
jane mi aveva avvertito
ho odiato l'ago che hanno usato per tirarla fuori

ma non č stato male
gli altri indossano sempre scarpe

fannulloni vigliacchi rammolliti
mascalzoni voltagabbana

e soprascarpe e cappelli e
guanti e soprabiti

non prendono mai spine
e non hanno mai freddo
e dicono "per favore"
e dicono "grazie"

(ma io sono la pių felice)
una volta ho calpestato una collina
loro non lo fanno mai
ma non hanno mai sentito l'erba
con i piedi nudi
